Municipality of Almere

Data analytics: a customised Power BI dashboard based on the FTG model

The municipality of Almere is located in the province of Flevoland and, with around 220,000 inhabitants, has the highest number of inhabitants of all municipalities in this province.

Assignment

The municipality of Almere was keen to have editors provide better content to citizens based on data. As a basis, we used Toon Vuursteen's FTG (Function-Task-Going) model. This model centres on the tasks visitors need to perform, what function pages on your website have in the context of these tasks, and visitors' behaviour on the pages with the different functions. This allows you to use data to optimise content so that users can properly perform the desired tasks.

Our analysts went through an extensive process with the municipality of Almere to create a custom Power BI dashboard. In such a dashboard, editors can easily see and use the data relevant to them. The dashboard is designed in the house style of the municipality of Almere, showing different pages of the theme Waste by type. This dashboard contains the following elements:

  • The pages are scored overall (how well are they doing on all KPIs);
  • Per page whether there is improvement or deterioration compared to last month;
  • The priority given to this page to improve it;
  • The score per KPI with a marker whether it is remarkably high or low (asterisk, flag).

Finally, our analysts did a number of workshops with the editors to guide them through the dashboard. Thanks to the comprehensive guidance and customised approach, they can independently improve the site with insights from data.

"Data analyst Fleur Boesenkool helped us with data interpretation and analysis. It was nice to be able to ask her: what exactly does this mean?"
