ExtraordinarilyguidedAccessibility for government agencies

Your path to accessibility status A

Under the Dutch Digital Government Act (WDO), government organizations are required to provide their public services in a digitally accessible manner. This is further detailed in the Government Digital Accessibility Decree (BDTO). But what steps do you need to take to achieve this? We’ll show you what you need to have in place right away and how you can ultimately achieve full compliance.

Getting the basics right: accessibility audit and statement

As a government agency, you are required to publish accessibility statements for all websites and apps under your responsibility. This allows you to demonstrate your current status and your improvement roadmap. Dutch government agencies can complete the statement using the Accessibility Statement Filling Assistant.

Before you start filling out the statement, it’s important to have an audit report. This report serves as the basis for your current status. Don’t have one yet? Or is it more than 3 years old? Then have an accessibility audit carried out.

Our audits provide insight into:

  • what accessibility issues your site or app has,
  • where they were found (including screenshots and code snippets),
  • and how you can resolve them.

In short, everything you need. We ensure that the audit is tailored precisely to your needs and requirements.

What’s included in this bundle?

  • a WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility audit that meets all requirements,
  • a report with a dashboard to support your accessibility statement,
  • concrete recommendations for improvement.

Pros:

  • you meet the legal obligation for government agencies,
  • a complete picture of where your site or app stands

Cons:

  • the audit is a snapshot in time,
  • achieving full accessibility requires more work,
  • limited to the team responsible for the website

The next step: monitoring for continuous insight and improvement

Your accessibility statement is up to date, and you know your current status. But accessibility is a never-ending process. Your site or app likely still has issues. Even if you’re fully compliant (Status A), you’re not there yet. After all, your site is constantly changing. New problems are always lurking.

With monitoring, you always know where you stand and can work systematically on improvements. While an audit is a snapshot in time, monitoring shows the impact of changes. Deque’s advanced Axe Monitor automatically tests your site. It doesn’t find every issue, but it finds more than enough to make a significant difference.

The big advantage? You can continuously track how your website’s accessibility is evolving without having to commission a new, expensive audit every time. Are improvements working? How does your site’s ongoing development affect accessibility? With the monitor, you see it immediately and always know where you stand. This allows you to act on KPIs.
